If you're like most people you might think of homeless people as living in the big cities under overpasses and on the street, pushing shopping carts. There is another type of homeless person that is very common around major cities and in the DC area. These individuals have many different stories, but in many cases they have lost jobs, broken families, and a significant drop in income so that housing has become unaffordable. Tent living is an alternative lifestyle for many individuals. It enables them to have a small place that they can call home while they try to work themselves back into the mainsteam of living. But one factor that often characterizes many homeless tent dwellers is that they struggle with addiction to drugs or alchohol which has taken control of their lives and made it impossible for them to hold a job.
As you can see in this video, tent living may be marginally better than living under an overpass but it is still a life on the edge of civilization. Crime and uncertainty is often the companion of the homeless. This video is from the suburbs of New Jersey, but there are many communities like it across the country. At Covenant Presbyterian we serve a community of homeless who are living in tents in the Laurel area and yet regularly attend Sunday services. Dealing with the homeless will challenge your preconceived notions about the poor and the underprivileged in many different ways.
